NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4: Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics

When considering the traits of a leader, there are a few things that come to mind. Being honest, trustworthy, being a leader by example, accepting others’ ideas and inspiring people are very good attributes to be attributed to a leader. To become a leader, you should work with other people successfully and be creative in your thoughts since this answer is able to generate more innovations and produce some positive results in an organization, as noted in the self-assessment of leadership skills. In this evaluation, I will cover a few different subjects. The importance of leadership, its many forms, efficient interaction, cooperation, and decision-making techniques will all be covered in detail in the first portion. I’ll go into more depth on the importance of ethics in the second segment. The NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4 will comprise answers to a survey that Western Medical Enterprises submitted.

Section 1: Leadership and Collaboration Experience

A few years ago, I was in charge of a team of nurses at the time of Covid conduct of vaccinations and Covid 19 testing of all population including children and grownups. Our team was focused on delivering doses of Covid vaccines in large quantities and in a safe and error-free setting as required in NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4. We were under much pressure and operated in a fast work environment during this period that would eventually donate to medication mistakes. In some vaccines it would need a certain dose of sodium chloride that is the dilutant to be placed in the vessel and injected in the body this would be injected by a few nurses who would inject either a lot or not enough of it which would result in no effective vaccine. In leadership self-assessment examples, when I was overseeing a number of nurses, one nurse told me that they injected excessive amounts of the diluent in the vaccine and that they would like to know a more effective method in which they could remember how much dilution to inject


when administering the vaccine. I now acknowledged the nurse who told me of this mistake, and who did not attempt to conceal it. I told the nurse that we should account this to the therapeutic clinician and the nurse was afraid what would happen to her due to this.

I explained to the nurse that everyone makes errors. When medical errors go unreported, you should be alarmed because we can now take action to guarantee the patient has a safe retrieval. The nurse and I worked together with the clinician to help her see the problem. Consequently, the physician said that while the patient would not be harmed, the injection would not work and the patient would have to come back thirty days later to receive the first dose of the immunization. We approached the patient, gave him the contact to call the immunization hotline, described what took place, and told him to report any unfavorable symptoms. Then, I called a staff conference and questioned everybody to tell me how I might help them remember how much solvent to put in each vaccination. In addition to gathering group thoughts, I also gathered my own. I used the transformative style of leadership in this manner as part of NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4.

A transformational leader will encourage beneficial changes and encourage other people to make a considerable change to the better of a group. These leaders rely on the optimistic response of the team to identify success. By identifying deficiencies in the team early such leaders can leverage a troubled team and mold it into an inspired, optimistic and efficient team of employees. The leaders of this kind promote collaboration among staff members not as a specialized department but within a team (Ugochukwu, 2024). The above characteristics of a transformational leader describe me as the kind of leader I am and aim to be every day. It also assisted my team in making my staff trust me as a leader capable of executing a strategy that

would be operative to decrease medical mistakes as it pertains to vaccine management by incorporating ideas of every member of the staff and communicating effectively.

It could be essential when carrying out decisions as a leader as the decision selected could not only have an effect on you, but it can either have a negative or a positive effect on the group. Critical thinking abilities and evidence-based methods can be helpful when a leader is carrying out choices. I decided to use a behavioral and directive approach to decision-making. The ethical leadership self-assessment tool highlights that working together as a team to find a solution is a component of behavioral decision making. In this technique, inclusivity is also incorporated so that each person may voice their opinions and a good, open debate is developed with the goal of reaching a mutually agreeable solution. Instruction style of decision making refers to leaders who are quick in making choices based on their information of proficiency (Chaudhary, 2023). Using the behavioral decision-making method in NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4, I led the nursing team by including all of the nurses and asking them to share their thoughts on how to create a system that would guarantee the proper quantity of diluent is injected each time a vaccination is administered.

By adopting this approach, my team and I were able to project a sense of mutual trust, which helped us come to a conclusion that would have a beneficial impact on the patients we were caring for in the community. I was quick to respond when the medication error occurred by speaking with the medical director and bringing the team together to provide a solution that would guarantee that the issue would not recur. This answer demonstrated the directed decision-making style since I made a quick choice. I listened to all the ideas and then put sheets with the breakdown of quantity of diluent required in each vaccine and color coded them. As a case in point, the infant color was maroon, the children color was blue and the adults color was

also red and there were separate stations so that when they diluted each vaccine, they were not mixed together and gave any confusion. I discussed this new idea with the medical director and she said that this initiative will be useful too, but she did not deny that medication errors will be reduced during vaccine administration. I am pretty sure that I made a successful decision and the result was positive and that I would never have done anything differently.

The communication also contributes significantly in the process of leading a group with the aim of reaching a positive resolution, as emphasized in the Collaborative leadership self-assessment. To ensure effective communication, you must ensure that whatever it is that you are communicating is clear, there should be some listening going on and a person should be attentive to non-verbal communication that is being exhibited. To make the dialogue clear, it is important to allocate time to outline the goals that are directed at the particular audience. Active attending involves giving the speaker your full attention to what he is saying. Non-verbal communication in NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4 can be helpful to be mindful of since it may be used to counter the verbal message that is being transmitted to the targeted listeners (Emerson, 2021). In order to convey my visions to the group and values, I ensured that I demonstrated open communications. After giving each nurse, a chance to present their thoughts to the group, I compiled the data into one approach. Since I knew it might involve detrimental to the information I was trying to convey, I made sure to be aware of the nonverbal clues I should use when speaking to my group. My nonverbal communication was achieving eye interaction with my team and ensuring that I do not cross my arms as this will send a negative message.

Everyone in the group was able to pay attention to each other’s thoughts and speak well when they sat down to discuss their own. I reassured the team by outlining the gravity of the issue of improper vaccine dilution and how it could negatively affect the patient’s immunity by

rendering the vaccine ineffective and requiring the patient to wait longer to receive the dose again, which would postpone the patient’s Covid-19 vaccination. Its ability to present data in a strong and concise manner and impart factual information to the group helped the team members work together quickly in finding a solution so that this mistake would not happen and the patient could be handled effectively. As I brought the issue to the group with truthful information and properly communicating with the group members, they were encouraged to find a solution that would cause a great change.

Section 2: Ethics Experience

In NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4, it is highlighted that in healthcare there are various ethical dilemmas which can occur but with correct guidance and understanding they will be effectively solved to the advantage of the patient. There are a number of these principles that conflict with each other; this is where an ethical dilemma arises according to (Levitt, 2014). I also ensured that I was able to refer to the code of ethics whenever ethical dilemma arose. The code of ethics refers to a collection of values that the American Nurses Association enforces to assist nurses in behaving in a reasonable way that is consistent with the quality of care in nursing as to what is deemed ethically right or wrong (Gaines, 2023). These four principles are autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence. In leadership self-assessment examples, autonomy is explained as patients making their own decisions after being informed of all the information they need to make an informed choice about their treatment, while justice is described as equal and fair treatment of patients. A state of beneficence occurs when the nurses extend a certain degree of care to patients in such a manner that it would be favorable to their

wellbeing. In administering care to patients and when inflicting no harm on them leads to a positive effect on their health, this term is called non-maleficence (Gaines, 2023).

I also remember an ethical problem that arose while I worked at a doctor’s workplace. After calling the individual in need back to the sitting room, I collected her information and vital signs. She then instructed me to print her a copy of the laboratory results from the previous year, which showed that her STD blood test had come back negative. Her lover was waiting in the individual in need area, and she was going to give him this copy. The patient explained that her boyfriend had taken her to the office to check her out on any diseases and she did not know how she would be getting her results back now. In order to change the date, she requested that I provide her the copy from the previous year. I educated the patient that although I couldn’t do that, I could update her blood and urine work at this time so she could have it corrected on her medical records and give the most recent copy to her partner.

Although the patient had a trick of her own that I soon discovered, she was eager to do blood and urine tests. When the patient left the conduct room, we discovered that she had combined her pee with a lot of water. I also showed her where the urinal was so she could deliver a urine sample. This situation, as reflected in NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4, demonstrates how after I informed the doctor about the concern, the clinician appropriately spoke with the patient and advised her not to dilute the urine with water and to submit a urine sample. The doctor continued by telling her that because it would be against our rules of ethics to change the dates, she could do so because we were unable to offer a printout from a year ago. We accompanied the patient and his girlfriend to the assessment room after the patient’s boyfriend approached the desk to inquire about the situation. The doctor agreed to let the boyfriend know about the issue after I told her that I wasn’t feeling at ease sharing it with him.

The patient’s partner became enraged upon learning of the issue and left the clinic. Instead of staying in the clinic with us, the patient went with her boyfriend, and we failed to collect the necessary samples for testing. All of the aforementioned guidelines served as our guidelines in this ethical problem as we made care to inform the patient that her actions were improper. We also practiced justice by doing what is right. The physician notified the boyfriend of the patient of the problem that was arising and by informing the patient how to go about things properly this encouraged autonomy. Beneficence and non-maleficence were also exhibited because we attempted to do what would most advantage the patient by telling her that we had to get new lab tests done and did not damage the patient in any way, as reflected in leadership self-assessment examples.

Conclusion

The self-assessment of leadership skills highlights that a person must possess a number of qualities in order to become a leader. These qualities include being honest, being reliable, and being able to hear what each team member has to say in order to lead effectively. Understanding the different leadership philosophies is important as they may have a big impact on how decisions are made to affect an organization’s overall success. Teamwork and communication are important components of leadership because they help the group develop rapport and trust in order to find a solution that might affect the quality of treatment a patient receives. Although one may be tempted to write down decisions on ethical dilemmas in the healthcare setting, NHS FPX 5004 Assessment 4 emphasizes the importance of following the code of beliefs as a guide to the decision-writing process.
